interFIRE VR was developed with funding from the ATF and American Reinsurance, now Munich Re, in partnership with the United States Fire Administration and the National Fire Protection Association. The original program was a virtual fire investigation where a fire scene was captured to produce an interactive VR scenario. The fire and the home's remains were recorded by multiple video cameras and a VR crew. The user was challenged to complete all fire investigation tasks including scene examination, interviewing, taking notes, collecting evidence, taking photographs, diagramming the scene, and preparing a report for a virtual District Attorney. The interFIRE VR program was distributed nationwide, and the interFIRE.org site that made some of the program's content available online stayed the leading resource for fire investigation for over twenty years. While the project's funding was halted a decade ago, the site was kept alive with some updates until 2025. As fire science and fire investigation have evolved, some of the interfire.org content became out of date. Therefore, interfire.org was decommissioned in the spring of 2025.
Following the success of interFIRE VR, the International Association of Arson Investigators launched CFITrainer.Net with funding from USFA/FEMA and the ATF. CFITrainer.Net is now the world's leader in online fire investigation training, education, and resources.
