(1) REDMAX BACKPACK BLOWERS RECALLED DUE TO FIRE HAZARD

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the manufacturers named below, today announced voluntary recalls of the following consumer products. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: RedMax Gas-Powered Backpack Blowers

Units: About 170,000

Importer: Komatsu Zenoah America, doing business as RedMax, of Norcross, Ga.

Hazard: The muffler support bracket can break, creating an opening in the muffler body. Hot exhaust gases can then escape from the muffler and could melt the fuel tank or ignite grease, oil or debris around the fuel tank, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: RedMax has received five reports of units that have caught fire when hot exhaust gases from damaged mufflers ignited grease, oil or debris around the area of the fuel tank. No injuries have been reported.

Description: The RedMax gasoline-powered backpack blowers are red and black with a white fuel tank. Model numbers EB6200, EB7000, EB7001, and EB7001RH can be found on the body of the blowers along with “RedMax,” “Zenoah,” and “Komatsu.”

Sold by: RedMax dealers nationwide from December 1996 through December 2005 for about $530

Manufactured In: Japan and Georgia

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the backpack blowers immediately and contact RedMax for a dealer location nearest to them to schedule a free inspection and a free repair if necessary. Consumers who have registered their equipment will receive direct notification about this recall from RedMax.

(2) SHINDAIWA INC. ANNOUNCES RECALL OF BACKPACK BLOWERS DUE TO FIRE HAZARD

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Shindaiwa Backpack Blowers

Units: About 87,000

Importer: Shindaiwa, of Tualatin, Ore.

Hazard: The backpack blower’s muffler support bracket can break, creating an opening in the muffler body. Hot exhaust gases could then escape from the muffler and melt the fuel tank or ignite grease or debris around the fuel tank, posing a fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Shindaiwa received one report of fire. No injuries reported.

Description and Models: The Shindaiwa gasoline-powered backpack blowers are red and black with a white fuel tank. Model numbers EB630 or EB630RT are printed on the body of the blowers along with Shindaiwa.

Sold by: Shindaiwa dealers nationwide from July 1999 through February 2006 for about $545.

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the backpack blowers immediately and contact Shindaiwa for the closest dealer location to schedule a free inspection and a free repair if necessary. Consumers who have registered their equipment will receive direct correspondence from Shindaiwa about this recall.

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 12862

Summary: ON CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A V8 ENGINE,THE POWER STEERING HOSE CONNECTORS MAY HAVE BEEN INADEQUATELY CRIMPED WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FLUID LEAK.

Consequence: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, POWER STEERING ASSIST MAY BE LOST AND INCREASED STEERING EFFORT WOULD BE REQUIRED AT LOW SPEEDS. ALSO, IF THE POWER STEERING FLUID WERE TO CONTACT HOT ENGINE PARTS, AN ENGINE COMPARTMENT FIRE COULD OCCUR.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE POWER STEERING GEAR INLET HOSE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 29, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080 OR CADILLAC AT 1-866-982-2339.

Summary: ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES, THE EXHAUST PIPE CONNECTION TO THE INLET AND OUTLET SIDE OF THE MUFFLER MAY COME APART.

Consequence: SHOULD EITHER OF THE CLAMPS COME APART THE SUPER-HEATED EXHAUST BEING EXPELLED IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT COULD CAUSE A FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE EXISTING BAND TYPE CLAMPS ATTACHING THE MUFFLER TO THE EXHAUST PIPE AND SECURE THE MUFFLER TO THE TAIL PIPE WITH GUILLOTINE TYPE CLAMPS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN ON APRIL 24, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT COUNTRY COACH AT 800-547-8015.

Summary: ON CERTAIN MOTOR HOMES, THE BATTERY CABLES THAT EXIT THE REAR OF THE BATTERY STORAGE COMPARTMENT ARE NOT ADEQUATELY SECURED. SHOULD THE CABLES BECOME UNSECURED, THEY COULD COME IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH THE ENGINE EXHAUST SYSTEM.

Consequence: IN THE EVENT THAT THE CABLES COME IN CONTACT WITH THE EXHAUST SYSTEM, THE CABLE PROTECTIVE COVERING COULD EVENTUALLY MELT CAUSING A DIRECT SHORT IN THE 12-VOLT ELECTRICAL SYSTEM, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL USE A TUBE CLAMP TO SECURE THE EXCESS LENGTH OF WIRE TO A STEEL TRUSS MEMBER ABOVE AND OUT OF THE WAY OF THE EXHAUST AND WILL ALSO ADD A HEAT SHIELD. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT COACHMEN AT 1-800-453-6064.

Potential Number Of Units Affected : 11886

Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE FUEL PUMP RETAINING TABS HOLDING THE FUEL LINES WERE DAMAGED DURING PRODUCTION.

Consequence: OVER TIME, THIS COULD CAUSE THE FUEL LINES TO LOOSEN FROM THE PUMP RESULTING IN FUEL LEAKAGE. IF AN IGNITION SOURCE WERE PRESENT, THE FUEL MAY IGNITE RESULTING IN A VEHICLE FIRE.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL DEVELOP A SECURING BRACKET THAT WILL SECURE THE FUEL LINES TO THE FUEL PUMP EVEN IF THE PLASTIC RETAINING TABS SHOULD BREAK. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING MAY 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SAAB AT 1-800-955-9007.
