Term of the week:

Ignition

the process of initiating self-sustained combustion. Ignition is produced by heating a material until the vapors released are heated beyond their ignition temperature, released in sufficient quantity to mix correctly with air, and thereby burst into flame. Contrary to how it may appear to the naked eye, when most solids ignite, what is actually igniting is the gases given off by the heated solid, not the solid part of the substance itself.
