EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:      This weekly newsletter covers:

  1. Ford Recalls 1995 Contour-Engines
  2. Cenex Harvest States Cooperatives Recall to Inspect Propane Gas

(1) FORD RECALLS 1995 CONTOUR-ENGINES

Ford Motor Company is recalling 300,000 1995 Contour and Mercury Mystique sedans equipped with the 2.5 V6 engine. Tightening of the engine cooling fan motor bearings, up to and including motor stall, can result in increased motor torque and higher than normal motor current and accompanying high motor temperatures.

Overheating of the cooling fan motor due to excessive current can result in smoke and odors from bearing grease, insulation and other internal motor components. If electrical current continues to be applied to the motor, internal motor components could ignite possibly igniting other engine compartment components.

The recall notice is at the following http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/mmy.cfm at the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

(2) CENEX HARVEST STATES COOPERATIVES RECALL TO INSPECT PROPANE GAS

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Cenex Harvest States Cooperatives (CHS) of Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota, is voluntarily coordinating the testing of propane gas delivered to dealers in five states. The propane may not have contained enough odorant to allow consumers to smell leaking gas, presenting a fire, explosion or thermal burn hazard to consumers.

CHS learned of two explosions involving propane gas in Montana that resulted in four injuries. CHS is coordinating the testing of propane gas distributed to the following dealers to ensure that the propane produced at the CHS Refinery in Laurel, Montana contained adequate quantities of odorant.
