Proper Procedures For a Fire Fighter In Dealing With Bodies At a Fire
Scene. The California Fire/Arson Investigator.
Abstract: This article describes the procedure for handling dead
bodies at a fire scene in California. Bodies should be left undisturbed
if they are not in any danger from the fire. If they must be moved, it
should be done carefully and any fragments from the body should be moved
with it. Teeth should be handled especially carefully because they are
used for identification purposes. Bite marks are indicators of homicide
and child abuse and if any are found on a body they should not be touched.
In the state of California, bite marks are a valid form of evidence identifying
the assailant. Overall, the condition of the bodies should be preserved
and any additional damage prevented.
