Abstract: This article discusses the growing demand for certification
of the fire investigator. The requirements of the certified fire investigator
(CFI) program from the International Association of Arson Investigators
(IAAI) is discussed.
An applicant for certification must obtain a minimum of 150 points in
a variety of areas that include training, education, and testifying before
being eligible to challenge the exam. The examination is comprised of 100
questions and is a closed-book test.
Following certification the CFI is required to maintain their proficiency
through ongoing continuing education, training and experience over a five
year period.
Robert B. Whitemore is the Past President of the International Association
of Arson Investigators, Inc. and is the President of Whitemore Fire Consultants,
Inc. of Prior Lake, MN. Mr. Whitemore has been involved in the fire investigation
field for over 20 years and has investigated most of the disastrous fires
