CSIA Certified Chimney Sweeps and You. Chimney Safety Institute of America,
Inc. 1993.
Abstract: This pamphlet provides information about the importance
of chimney service professionals and what their job entails. It is critically
important to maintain a chimney system because a neglected system is a serious
fire hazard and can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning. A chimney sweep
will examine the chimney and the fireplace, woodstove, gas, oil or coal
heating system that it is attached to. Chimney sweeps will install, clean,
and maintain the entire chimney system. Cleaning a chimney involves removing
accumulated creosote and soot, as well as other debris that may block the
flow of emissions. A chimney sweep also provides information to homeowners
about their chimney's safe and efficient operation.
In the United States, the chimney service trade is not regulated, which
results in unqualified people offering their services at a lower cost. Homeowners
seeking the service of a chimney sweep should hire a CSIA certified chimney
sweep. The Chimney Safety Institute of America offers an educational program
that teaches chimney sweeps all the technical aspects of the industry they
need to know.
