Harrison, Gregory A. Tanner, Craig R. The Importance of NFPA 921; A
Documented Case. Fire Engineering. Vol. 147. No. 1 (January 1994), p 47-49+.
Abstract: The authors present a case study in which the investigative
results were questioned. The original finding was that the fire had been
incendiary in nature and the homeowner was denied payment by his insurance
company. Independent investigators were brought in eighteen months later
and arrived at a completely different conclusion, classifying the fire not
as incendiary but as one of unknown cause. As a result, a large payment
was made to the homeowner, which included court costs and attorney fees.
The article asserts that the original investigators, failing to follow the
guidelines in NFPA 921, came to an erroneous conclusion, and nearly denied
an innocent homeowner payment on his insurance policy. The independent investigators,
however, followed the guidelines and their technique yielded more accurate
information.
