Abstract: This article discusses the search for three suspected
arsonists in a series of wildland fires in southern California.
Three fires were set on September 23, 1997 in southern California. All
were set within a very short period of time, and crews working on one fire
had to be pulled off to attack the other two fires. They were able to contain
the first two, but the third one got away from the crews.
Witnesses had observed three individuals in a pickup truck driving along
and throwing objects from the truck. According to the author, "ignition
devices" were recovered. At one point a helicopter flying over the
fire tried to chase the vehicle, but the pilot said that they were always
"one fire behind."
