Begin With a Fire; End With a Fraud. Fraud Fire Committee Column. Fire
and Arson Investigator. Vol. 48, No. 3 (March 1998), p 28-29.
Abstract: Fraudulent financial claims resulting from arson fires
are increasing. Investigators, performing a proper and careful investigation,
are in a good position to discover and initiate fraud cases, such as the
one described in this article.
The author shares the facts of the case, describes the detailed financial
investigation that ensued and explains how by chance, a similar case involving
the same individuals was discovered. Through careful investigation, collaboration
and meticulous tracking of documents, arrests were made and fines were paid,
thereby supporting the value of careful fact gathering and following a paper
trail.
