Curious Children & Fire, What Every Parent Should Know. National
Arson Prevention Initiative. Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Abstract: This pamphlet outlines a three-step approach for parents
to answer their children's curiosity about fire. Step one is to educate
children about fire, the damage it can cause, and the safety rules to follow
when using fire. Step two is to control a child's access to fire by keeping
matches and lighters out of their reach and never leaving a candle, stove,
or fire unattended. Step three is to set a good example for children by
following safety precautions and explaining what they are to children. The
pamphlet also provides family safety tips such as posting emergency numbers
and formulating a fire escape plan in case of an emergency.
